On the 3rd, 77 days before the opening of the competition, the organizing committee held a press conference at the conference room of the Korea Tourism Organization in Jung-gu, Seoul, with co-organizing committee chairman Jin Jong-oh and Secretary General Kim Cheol-min in attendance to raise national interest.
The 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics, which will be held for the first time on the Asian continent, will open on January 19th next year and be held until February 1st with passionate competition by 1,900 athletes from 80 countries in Gangneung, Pyeongchang, Jeongseon, and Hoengseong, Gangwon-do.
There are a total of 81 gold medals in 7 games and 15 events, and to continue the legacy of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, almost all games will be held at the Olympic Stadium.
As the event aims to spread the Olympic spirit and promote camaraderie among youth around the world through sports, various cultural experiences and educational events play an important role in the Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics.
According to the organizing committee, the Games budget, which consists of national funds, provincial funds, International Olympic Committee (IOC) subsidies, marketing revenue, and public service expenses, is only 77 billion won.
Despite the limited budget, the organizing committee is putting a lot of effort into transporting athletes, providing support, and preparing cold weather measures in order to hold the competition without a hitch.
The organizing committee operates the Gangneung Wonju University dormitory (2,600 students) and Jeongseon High1 Condominium (350 students) as the athletes' village.
After arriving at Incheon International Airport, athletes from each country travel to Gangneung and Jeongseon by bus instead of high-speed trains to avoid difficulties transporting equipment.
The organizing committee announced that it will operate 150 shuttle buses during the tournament to make every effort to transport players, and that it has also established measures to protect visitors from the cold by placing large heating tents and infrared heaters around the stadium.
The opening ceremony will be held simultaneously at Gangneung Oval and Pyeongchang Dome on January 19, 2024, and the closing ceremony will be held on the outdoor stage of Gangneung Olympic Park on February 1, 2024.
The organizing committee plans to raise interest by opening a ticket reservation site (https://tickets.gangwon2024.org) at 11:11 a.m. on the 11th.
A variety of cultural performances featuring K-pop, which is very popular among foreigners, highlight the competition.
Lee Kwan-pyo, planning director of the organizing committee, introduced, “We plan to perform three K-pop performances before the start of the competition, at the opening ceremony, and during the competition, and we are currently recruiting performers.”
The National Ballet, Korean traditional culture performance team, and Kukkiwon Taekwondo demonstration team will be at the forefront of promoting Korean culture, and the organizing committee added that educational programs in which youth from around the world can participate are also being planned.
Secretary-General Kim Cheol-min said, “I understand that there are some concerns that it will be a second jamboree incident,” but added, “For the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics, the organizing committee, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and Gangwon-do will prepare for the Games in a consistent and systematic system for three years.
“We have done it,” he emphasized.
He continued, “There are no facility-related risks as we use 100% of the facilities used in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, and 50% of the organizing committee staff and 70% of the private support staff are made up of people who have experience in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, so we are preparing for this event.
“I am receiving great help,” he added.
Finally, Secretary General Kim emphasized that the safety of participants is a top priority, saying, “The IOC command and organizing committee are thoroughly preparing for the overall operation of the Games through 20 meetings, and we have inspected the facilities more than 150 times with international federations for each event.”
The organizing committee plans to officially open the Metaverse platform, which utilizes virtual reality technology for the first time in a Youth Olympics, in January next year to enable sports-loving residents of the world to enjoy games and the 2024 Gangwon Youth Winter Olympics in general by registering on a simple website.
